I Know When That Pager Bling ... Why Healthcare NEEDS to Catch Up to the Technological World [VIDEO]

What do car-phones, pagers, Nintendo, and Sony Discman all have in common? They were the top contenders for the hottest gadgets of 1985. You read that right-1985, as in over 30 YEARS ago! While cell phones quickly displaced car-phones and pagers in the 1990s, it seems the world of healthcare never received the memo...

When it comes to patient care, we all know that it takes a village - a village of medics, doctors, nurses, pharmacists, lab, and the list goes on and on. It is difficult to fathom that communication for this team primarily relies on technology that is over 30 years old. Apply this scenario to your personal life.

Can you imagine communicating with your village via pager and fax machine? “Honey, I see you paged me, so I'm just calling back. What's up?" "Hi, can you please fax our pizza order over to Pizza Palace?” “Yes, but first I need to phone Lisa's assistant to have her tell Lisa that I can’t make it to the party tonight. Then if she gets the message and eventually pages me back, I'll know we're all good to stay in for Pizza!"

Besides the mere inconvenience, what does failure to adopt improved communication
techniques really mean for the health care industry? A loss of 12 BILLION dollars
annually in the US alone. That is 4 million annually for a 500 bed facility! (Source 1).

Not only does failure in communication negatively impact the hospital pocketbook, more
importantly it compromises the quality of patient care. “Communication failures are a common
cause for inadvertent patient harm. The complexity of medical care, coupled with the inherent
limitations of human performance, make it critically important that clinicians have standardized
communication tools” (Source 2).

We know that outdated methods of communication are frustrating, are robbing the system blind,
and are enabling subpar care for our patients - but what other options do we have? Pulsara offers
the solution to standardize communication while utilizing modern technology so that you
can communicate effectively, cost-efficiently, and safely.
