Nurses play a pivotal role in healthcare, guiding both patients and their families through some of the most challenging times with unwavering compassion and dedication. Nurses advocate for their patients, coordinate care among different healthcare professionals, and ensure that each patient’s journey is as smooth and comfortable as possible. From bedside care to large-scale health operations, nurses don't just perform tasks; they provide comfort, enact change, and save lives. This National Nurses Week, we at Team Pulsara wanted to take a moment to recognize nurses' profound impact on our healthcare system and the lives of the patients they care for.
Brittany Means, RN, BSN, currently serves as Pulsara's Vice President of Revenue Operations. But before her time at Pulsara, Brittany cared for patients as a registered nurse at CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System.
When asked what this year's National Nurses Week theme of "Nurses Make the Difference" means to her, here's what Brittany had to say:
Nurses have the unique opportunity to provide hands-on, continuous support to their patients for the duration of their shift, fostering a sense of security and reassurance that comes with a consistent presence and a familiar face. This continuous presence not only facilitates advocacy for patient needs within the complex healthcare system, but also allows them to build deep, trusting relationships with those under their care.
Nurses play a pivotal role in educating patients about their conditions and treatment options, which is a crucial step in empowering them to make informed decisions about their health. However, what truly resonates with me is the chance to provide compassionate care, offering comfort and encouragement to patients during times of vulnerability. These moments of connection and empathy are where I feel nurses can make a profound impact, enriching both patients' experiences and their own sense of fulfillment in their nursing role.
Throughout her nursing career, Brittany formed deep connections with many of her patients as she cared for them throughout their time in the hospital. Brittany's patients were so touched by her care and compassion that they nominated her for The DAISY Award, an award given to nurses who demonstrate exceptional clinical expertise, extraordinary compassion, and profound care for their patients and families.
It’s worth noting: when I received The DAISY award, I was the newest nurse in the intensive care unit. It wasn’t my experience, but my compassion that was the common thread of each nomination from patients and their families. It underscores that anyone, regardless of their position or credentials, can profoundly impact the lives they serve simply by being present, listening, offering comfort, and holding a hand.
To every nurse out there: we extend our heartfelt gratitude to you for your service. Your dedication, compassion, and commitment do not go unnoticed. You make a difference in countless lives every day. Know that your efforts are deeply appreciated. Thank you for your unwavering service and your compassionate care for your patients.
How has a nurse positively impacted your life or the life of a loved one? In what ways has a nurse's attention to detail, kindness, compassion, or listening ear made a difference for you? Let us know your story or thoughts in the comments below.
